Case Types for Circuit Court
The following are the types of cases that the Circuit Court has jurisdiction over, and for which the Circuit Clerk's Office will accept and file pleadings in.
Criminal: all felony criminal cases (cases where the accused, if found guilty, could be sent to prison).
Civil: all civil cases with claims of more than $25,000.
Family Division Cases: all cases regarding divorce, paternity, personal protection (PPO) actions.
Appeals: cases appealed from the other trial courts or from administrative agencies.

Each case number must include a case code. The Clerk will not assign a case code for you. You must select your own case code, when opening a new case.
