Household Hazardous Waste

Welcome to Livingston County’s Household Hazardous Waste page! Here you will learn about programs like Collection Events, when and where events are held, and the types of items we accept and do not accept.  You can also find out about less toxic alternatives and how you can help us reduce waste in Livingston County.  Just click the links for the information you need.

This valuable public program is supported by the Livingston County Board of Commissioners and the Livingston County Drain Commissioner’s office and staff.  With additional support and cooperation from the townships, we are able to offer battery collection sites, notification of events, and participation from staff and volunteers.

REUSE, REDUCE, RECYCLE

The best way for you to reduce hazardous waste is to buy only what you can use and use up what you buy.  If you have product left over, see if someone you know can use it.  You can also try to use Alternative cleaning and pesticides products.

Helpful information on disposing or recycling of everyday items, can be found in our LIVINGSTON COUNTY GUIDE TO REUSE, REDUCE, RECYCLE AND SAFE DISPOSAL.  Many of the following links are taken from that guide.

How Do I recycle……

  1. Motor Oil?
  2. Got Paint?
  3. Batteries?
  4. Large Items?
  5. Sharps/Needles?
  6. Prescription Medications - Big Red Barrels
  7. TVs, Computers, Electronics - Due to rising costs, the Livingston County Solid Waste Program will not be offering electronics collections at this time.  However, Recycle Livingston will take electronics for a fee.  Also check other locations listed in our guide.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION EVENTS

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events are free to Livingston County RESIDENTS. However, donations are accepted at collection events to offset the costs to the County of hazardous waste removal by a vendor.  We appreciate your cooperation, support, and participation in these valuable events.

Typically there are three (3) HHW events offered each year, one each in the Spring, Summer, and Fall.  As always, in order to participate in an HHW Collection, an appointment must be made in advance.  Making an appointment assists staff in traffic management, and allows time for safe removal of waste from participants' vehicles.  Calls for required appointment times are accepted beginning in April.

Visit our HHW Collection Events page for information onLOCATIONS AND MAKING AN APPOINTMENT

PLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF ITEMS except on appointed days and times.   All household hazardous waste is collected and removed by a vendor only on the collection days.  We do not have facilities to store hazardous waste items.
